Gathering and arranging frills

Crinkled frills are used in sewing bed linen and decorative pillows. Single frills are delicate, double are used for reinforcement or in articles made of two different materials. For frills, you have to predict from 1,5 do 3 times more material, than their planned length is supposed to be. We wrinkle thick fabrics slightly, thin – more densely. The frills folded into folds are from 2,5 do 3 times more material than the planned length. We line the individual parts with a loop stitch, and for the corners we allocate a stock of material.

SINGLE FRILL- We cut the strip of material of the desired length and width, adding allowance for seams. The bottom edge is hemmed by hand or on a machine (see picture). We protect the top edge against fraying and wrinkle it with one of the methods given here.

DOUBLE FRILL – We cut a strip of fabric of the planned length and double width with a reserve 3 cm. We trim and press the longer sides. We fold the strip of fabric along in half, the wrong side of the fabric facing you, and press along the fold line. We wrinkle both layers of fabric.

HAND SHRINK

1 MANUAL SHIRT STITCH – We use it for shirring medium and thick fabrics and for sewing double frills. A strong thread is needed here> the end of which is secured with a knot. We sew with a basting stitch of the appropriate length.

2 MATERIAL SHIRT – We hold the free end of the thread tightly. We move the fabric towards the end of the thread tied with a knot, until we get the desired length. We tie a knot, we align the folds, pin and baste the valance to the appropriate part of the product.
