Measuring curtains

REQUIRED MEASUREMENTS – The length of the curtain rod and the curtains are the basis for calculating the amount of material needed for curtains. We measure most accurately using a steel tape measure or a wooden ruler. To calculate the width of the fabric, you need to measure the span of the curtain rod between the stops (A). By measuring the distance from the rail to the floor (B) or from rail to window sill (C) we start with a bar or rail.
Depending on the planned length of the curtains, the obtained length B or C must be slightly increased or decreased
A – LENGTH OF THE CURTAIN
B – DISTANCE FROM RAIL TO FLOOR
C – DISTANCE FROM RAIL TO WINDOW SILL

The amount of fabric needed depends on the width of the opening, the method of suspension, kind of shirring tape, the length of the curtain and the size of the pattern on the fabric. So that the curtains reaching the floor do not rest on it, should be subtracted 12 mm from the rail-to-floor distance (B). if we want, so that folds fold over the floor, 5-20 cm must be added to the length of B.. Two lengths are used for curtains that extend up to the window sill: or 12 mm above the window sill (C), or 5-20 cm below - the so-called. length of the apron. The top of the curtain should cover the rail or slightly protrude above it. If we use a bar curtain rail, the curtain should hang just below it. The length of the fabric should be equal to the distance from the top edge of the curtain or the selected curtain rod to the bottom edge of the curtain of the selected length. We add more 7,5 cm on the lining of the top and 15 cm around the bottom.

To determine the width of the fabric you need, we measure the span of the curtain rod (A) and we add so much, how much is necessary, if the curtains are to overlap. We multiply the obtained sum by the thickness of the shirring tape. We add 30 cm to put the side edges. To learn, how many parts will be needed for the width of the curtain, we divide it by the width of the fabric, rounding up to the nearest whole number. The total amount of fabric needed is calculated by multiplying the number of parts needed by the length calculated above.

PATTERN MATCHING

When calculating the amount of patterned material, we must also take into account the need to precisely match the pattern across the entire width of the curtain. We always try to place the pattern centrally on each curtain.

MEASURING A REPEATING PATTERN

We spread the selected curtain fabric on a smooth one, flat surface and carefully measure the size of one repeating pattern. That's enough, if we add one pattern in addition to each part of the curtain, enough to match the pattern on both sides of the seam or on adjacent curtains.

SLICING

Cutting carefully is just as important as measuring accurately. We spread the fabric on a flat surface. We cut at right angles and along the fiber or, if it is necessary, according to the pattern. You will need basic sewing utensils to cut the fabric. Cut loosely woven fabrics along the pulled thread.

1 REMOVING THREAD We cut the edge of the fabric a little, we take a single thread from this place and smooth the fabric again.

2 FABRIC CUTTING Using the channel formed after pulling the thread as a guideline, we cut the fabric with tailor's scissors.
